Aqua-Natal Exercises combines the therapeutic properties of the water with a unique whole body holistic workout. Being supported in the water provides a low-impact environment to exercise with the huge benefit of easing the pregnancy aches & pains. The buoyancy of the water gives you the feeling of being weightless, taking the pressure off your joints and connective tissues (plus the weight of the bump). As ACOG state that 60% of all pregnant women experience lower back pain, being in the water decreases lower back pain and improves your overall health.
During pregnancy the body core temperature increases by 0.5ºc. It is advised not to allow the woman to overheat during exercise but being in the water cools them down & remain cooler than in land based exercise. Exercising in the water has a cooling effect on the body which reduces heat stress to the foetus. This means by participating in aqua-natal classes you are able to do apply more effort than out of the water.
As a result of the body being cooler it also reduces the heart rate response with similar oxygen consumption to land-based exercise. Exercising increases blood flow to the placenta which is great for the babies’ growth & development. Research has shown that exercising whilst pregnant prevents excessive weight gain and helps protect mother & baby from chronic diseases such as Type 2 diabetes.
There is a really lovely social side to these aqua natal classes, the ladies bond over their pregnancies and meet up after the class for a drink and a chat in the café. They all support each other through the different stages of their pregnancy. Over the weeks as friendships are formed they have returned to the pool with their babies as well as attend the classes to repair and strengthen their bodies post birth.
Aqua Natal classes combine all fitness components into one session with none of the stresses or strains on the body which means it is the safest and most sensible form of exercise to do whilst pregnant.
